Playing Oct 8 through Oct 10 & Oct 14 through Oct 17 ![]() Written by Larry Cohen and David Crane A Mainstage Production directed by G. Derek Adams Set in the 1930s, EPIC PROPORTIONS tells the story of two brothers, Benny and Phil, who go to the Arizona desert to be extras in the huge Biblical epic Exeunt Omnes. Things move very quickly in this riotous comedy and before you know it, Phil is directing the movie, and Benny is starring in it. To complicate matters further they both fall in love with Louise, the assistant director in charge of the extras. Along the way there are gladiator battles, the Ten Plagues and a cast of thousands portrayed by four other actors. "…everything in it is a delight…it's delicious." —NY Post. "…clever, witty spoof of Hollywood will have you in stitches." —American Reporter. Coming Next: Playing October 22 through October 24, 2010 A Night of Pinter: Night School & A Night Out by Harold Pinter A Second Stage Production directed by Terrell Austin and Lisa Cesnik Ferguson Find out why the term "Pinter-esque" was coined in this double feature where theatre is reduced to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where people are at the mercy of each other and pretense crumbles.
On Saturday, April 24, 2010, members of the Town & Gown Players in Athens, Georgia planted three trees in groundbreaking ceremony for a planned Memorial Heritage Garden, called Arcadia, dedicated to the memories of Marie E. Bruce, Thomas Tanner, and Ben Teague. Tom Stoppard's Arcadia was the last production on which Marie, Tom, and Ben collaborated in December 2008 and the word refers to a beautiful and natural landscape. The members of Town & Gown Players are deeply grateful to the Athens area community and to the countless people from all over the country who reached out to support our group after the tragedy at the theater last year. Numerous monetary gifts were made to our organization in memory of our three dear friends and using those donations to build a garden -- a place of reflection and a place for celebrations -- seems in keeping with the individual spirits of Marie, Tom, and Ben. The new garden area will create a gathering place adjacent to the Athens Community Theater building in a location that has previously been uncultivated. Arcadia is being built with donations in memory of our friends, contributions of time and talent from Town & Gown Player's ranks, and in-kind gifts from businesses in our community. The garden is our thank-you to the unfailingly generous community that surrounded us with love and support when we needed it most. It is our hope that generations of Athenians and visitors will enjoy the peace and beauty we are creating outside our theater. On this dubious anniversary, all members of the Town & Gown Players, past and present, are united in loving thoughts for the families of Marie, Tom, and Ben. The memories we hold of each of them and the roles they played in Town & Gown provide our motivation to continue providing the best of live community theater, as Town & Gown Players has since 1953. |
