CAROUSEL

Written by Oscar Hammerstein, II; music by Richard Rodgers; lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II
Directed by Drew Doss
Audition Dates: April 12 through April 13, 2010

In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive mill worker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent "up there." Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, CAROUSEL was Rodgers & Hammerstein's personal favorite.

This show runs from June 4 through June 6 & June 10 through June 13, 2010
This is a Mainstage show. All Mainstage shows hold open auditions and are cast entirely by audition. The director has great leeway on how auditions are run, and so they can vary greatly from one show to another. They begin at 7pm each night, and are held at the theater.

The director has this to say about auditions:
Auditions will begin at 6pm on Monday, April 12th. If you can't make it until later, that's fine, but try to get there as close to 6 as possible. Auditioners should come PREPARED with 16-32 bars of music. We will do the singing auditions first. After singing, we will do cold reading from the script. We will hold callbacks on Tuesday night (4/13), again starting at 6. If there is no way you can make the initial auditions on Monday, email the director and he will work something out for you on Tuesday. During the callbacks, there will be a movement audition; please come dressed appropriately. If you have any questions, please contact Drew Doss at drewdoss03@hotmail.com or adoss@oconee.k12.ga.us
