Some Facts About Town & Gown

We're the oldest community theater company in our area

How old:
Town & Gown has been producing continuously since 1953. The company has made its home in the Athens Community Theater since 1968.

Productions and performances:
Two series of productions, Mainstage consisting of six shows usually performed eight times, and Second Stage consisting of six shows usually performed three times. A typical season comprises between 60 and 70 performances (63 in 1998-99). To see a list of all shows presented by the Players, click here

Who may take part:
We read "the community" broadly—anyone can audition, help build sets and costumes, or assume responsibility for administrative and front of house duties. Our current members include theater professionals, skilled amateur actors, self-taught techies and people who just think a bad day in a theater beats a great day anywhere else.

Casting policies:
Mainstage shows are cast entirely on the basis of open auditions. Second Stage casting lies in the director’s discretion, and most of these productions do not hold auditions. All casting decisions made by the director are final. Cast members, if not already Town & Gown Players members, must join within two weeks after the cast announcement.

Membership:
You can join T&G for annual dues of $10. You get the Envoy, our newsletter, special Mainstage and Second Stage ticket prices, limited free refreshments at Mainstage performances, and the right to vote in elections of officers (provided your membership dates from before September 1).

Pay scale:
Everybody works for the love of it. We have no permanent staff. (Professional musicians recruited for some productions may receive an honorarium.)
