Mainstage Season Presents ...
Now Playing!
THE LION IN WINTER
Written by James Goldman Directed by W. Steven Carroll
Playing July 30 through August 8, 2010
The Town & Gown Players presents the final show of its 2009-2010 main stage season with James Goldman's THE LION IN WINTER: a war of wits between an aging warrior-king and his conniving, abandoned queen as they spend a bitter Christmas cooped up in a French castle with the rest of their strife-riddled family. Hearts are on the line and a kingdom is at stake as the pair's love-hate relationship plays out on the stage in a dazzling display of wordplay.
Passion and politics give shape to the proceedings, in turn darkly comic and violently tragic: time begins to run out for the king and he must either choose an heir or find a new one. With a trio of sons scheming for the throne, a young mistress tired of being a pawn, a rival king hungry for revenge and eager to turn the family against itself, and a scorned, vengeful queen manipulating them all, it'll be a wonder if the Lion survives the winter.
The award-winning play runs July 30 – August 1 and August 5 – 8 (8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinees). Tickets are $15 Friday and Saturday, $12 for students and seniors, and $12 for all seats at Sunday matinees and the Thursday performance. For tickets, call 706-208-TOWN (8696).
