Getting to the Athens Community Theater
From the Athens Perimeter (Paul Broun Parkway), exit at Prince Avenue and turn east toward Athens. After you pass Dunkin Donuts on the right, look on your left for the Taylor-Grady House, an old mansion with white columns and a historic marker. Turn left on Grady Avenue. The theater is immediately behind the big house.

Coming in on Georgia Highway 316, watch for signs saying "UGA Stadium" but don’t take that exit. Cross the overpass and immediately exit right, onto the Perimeter. Home Depot = Too Far. Then follow the directions above.

From west and south Athens, take Milledge Avenue north. At the Dunkin Donuts, turn right on Prince, then follow the directions above.

From downtown and east Athens, take Dougherty/Prince west to Grady Avenue.

Parking
Our lot is very small, but there is on-street parking all around. The lot contains one van-accessible handicapped space. Town & Gown Players assumes no responsibility for parked cars or property left in them.

Access
The exterior of the building is ramped. We are renovating our restrooms and auditorium to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. For more information, leave a message on voice mail at (706) 548-3854 or send us an e-mail.

Assistive listening equipment is available at the box office for theatergoers with moderate hearing impairment.

The Town and Gown Theater Guild
The Town and Gown Theater Guild was formed in 1974 to support and encourage the growth of theater in the Athens community and in particular the Town and Gown Players, Inc. With a membership of only 30 members the Guild has helped with ticket sales, advertising, champagne receptions for long term supporters, play selection committee members, box office and usher duties, yearly fundraisers for particular needs of the theater and many other projects through the years.

1999-2000 Season Guild officers:
President: Wendy Chandler
President-Elect: Laura Cofer
Secretary: Angie Bentley
Treasurer: Kelly Tison
Liaison:  Sissy Toro

About the Playhouse
Town & Gown has performed in the Athens Community Theater since 1969. The building was erected and given to the municipal government by Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Mathis; the architect was Robert Nichols. Although T&G’s 60-70 annual performances alone would qualify it as overworked, the playhouse also doubles as scene shop, costume shop, and materials warehouse.

At the party we gave to celebrate our 30 years in the playhouse, Mayor Gwen O’Looney presented Town & Gown with a Key to the City. A few copies of the illustrated commemorative booklet are still available at $2 each; to order yours, send us an e-mail. The book naturally wasn’t big enough to hold all the stories; click here to read a few that wouldn’t fit.

A renovation campaign is under way. We offer handicapped-accessible restrooms and audience seating. Still to come: a new layout for box office and concessions, a new look for the lobby, and improvements to the auditorium. Stage and backstage areas will be reworked in later phases.
